Writing in Czech (Čeština) on your Mac

Adding the ability to type in another language, such as Czech, on your OS X Mac is quite simple. Follow these instructions and you will be typing your Czech homework in no time.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences
  2. Click the International preference icon
  3. From the top tabs, click Input Menu
  4. Scroll down the list until you find the language you want to enable, then click the checkbox next to that keyboard layout
  5. At the bottom of this window click the checkbox for 'Show input menu in menu bar'
  6. open TextEdit or some other program that you want to get international in
  7. From the input menu on the left of your menu bar, choose the language you want to type in
  8. Start typing

Let me guess, you got this far then you realize you don't know what key or key combo maps to 'ě'. You need the keyboard viewer.

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences
  2. Click the International preference icon
  3. From the top tabs, click Input Menu
  4. Near the top of the list you find the Keyboard Viewer, click the checkbox next to this palette. If you don't see the Keyboard Viewer listed, please see my post Mac 10.5 Leopard ate my Keyboard Viewer.
  5. From the input menu on the left of your menu bar, choose Show Keyboard Viewer
